The Big 3 Record Labels in New York and How to Contact Them
Sony Music

Sony Music, the second-largest record label globally, also owns Sony/ATV, the largest music publisher in the entire world. That, of course, gives Sony Music an advantage over all other labels.
Sony’s label (and its subsidiaries, which may number in the hundreds) may earn billions, but it is still just a small part of Sony, touching every aspect of entertainment.

Warner Music Group

Despite being the youngest by several decades, Warner Music Group claims the smallest market share of the three major record labels. For many years, the company traded shares on the stock market to differentiate itself from its competitors.
The company was then bought out by Access Industries, which decided to go public again in 2020. As part of the Warner conglomerate but now operating independently, the company moved into online media a few years ago, increasing its revenue streams.

Universal Music Group

Universal Music Group, the largest of the three major record labels by a wide margin, also boasts the largest roster of artists across its numerous subsidiary labels (which could number in the triple digits).
Over 8,000 people work for the company, and it has offices in dozens of countries. A part of Universal Music Group is owned by both Vivendi and Tencent, two even larger companies.
The giant has worked hard to keep up with the changing music industry with its vast library of musicians, songs, and albums. The company has prioritized digital, and streaming platforms and finding new revenue streams, and UMG has been praised for being “forward-thinking” due to this approach.

Independent Record Labels in New York and How to Contact Them
Matador Records

Matador Records is New York City-based, and Chris Lombardi established it in 1989 from his apartment there. Indie rock, punk rock, experimental rock, and alt-rock are all part of the label's repertoire.
They released their first album with Austrian duo H.P. Zinker. More and more artists were added as time went on – Superchunk, Dustdevils, and Railroad Jerk.
In 1990, Lombardi hired Gerard Cosloy, who has run the label with Lombardi ever since.
Having released successful acts like The Arsonists, Modest Mouse, Cat Power, and M. Ward, it is now one of the most prominent independent labels in New York. Matador added artists and employees to the True Panther Sounds team as part of the acquisition.
Check out Algiers, Car Seat Headrest, or Iceage to see what type of artists the label will sign in 2019.

Ba Da Bing Records

Ba Da Bing Records is a Brooklyn-based label founded by Ben Goldberg. Ben was a publicist for Merge and Matador before establishing his own label. Among the label's biggest releases is the debut recording of Beirut – Ba Da Bing.
Ba Da Bing has also found success with Sharon Van Etten and the tUnE-yArDs, but they're not resting on their laurels. Many of the bands they are signing are from the NYC scene, such as Woom and Slothrust.
You’ll find experimental indie, punk, indie rock, and more on their label.
