In 2021, the song reached number one in Australia, and in 2022 it earned its spot at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number five on the UK Singles Chart. It also earned the band two Brit Award nominations at the 2022 Brit Awards and their first-ever Grammy nomination in the Best New Artist category.

Bayley had been born and raised in the US before his family moved back to the UK when he was thirteen. He enrolled at St. Edward's University on a music scholarship, where he was introduced to MacFarlane, who had also grown up in the US, and subsequently to Irwin-Singer and Seaward. They released their debut EP, Leaflings, on May 28, 2012 via independent record company K
