Why Band Manager Contracts Are Important

As the song goes, “you can't always get what you want.” But when it comes to your band, you need to make sure that you and your fellow musicians are on the same page about what you expect from your manager—and vice versa.

A contract lays out everyone's roles and responsibilities in black-and-white terms so that there's no confusion down the line. Everybody will know what a music manager does and doesn't do.

What's more, a contract protects your interests should things go south. Let's say, for example, that you've been working with a manager for six months, and things aren't going as planned.

Maybe they're not getting you the gigs you want or they're not promoting your music the way you'd like. If you have a contract, you can simply terminate the agreement and part ways without any hard feelings—or costly legal battles.

But here's the thing: not all contracts are created equal. In fact, some managers will try to take advantage of naïve bands by including clauses that are unfair or one-sided.

That's why it's important to have a lawyer look over any contract before you sign it on the dotted line. They can make sure that everything is fair and in your best interests so that you can focus on making great music—not worrying about whether or not your manager is screwing you over.

Remember, these are just templates. They can be used raw, or used to give you a sense and idea of what to include in your contract. But before you sign anything, be sure to have an entertainment lawyer look it over so that you're not getting taken advantage of.

If you don't have a lawyer, no problem! We've got you covered with our directory of lawyers and law firms that specialize in the music industry. Just search for “entertainment lawyer” and your city or state to get started.

A good lawyer will be able to spot any clauses that may be unfair or one-sided, and can help you negotiate a better contract. In some cases, they may even be able to get certain clauses removed entirely
